THE SHELL CRACKED
Bekim Hasaj & Valentina Gelain
Art Centre Itä 13.11-5.12.2025
The exhibition cycle “The Shell Cracked” opened in January 2025, and the duo show presented at Riutta Gallery, at Art Centre Itä, is the fifth and last of the year. In this case, the artistic body presented is practically unpublished, and mainly features video art, sculptural installations and experimental poetry by the artist duo Hasaj-Gelain.
The work of visual poetry ´A Veil of Reason over the Unconscious´, created for issue five of Kontradiktion journal, will be screened for the first time in a gallery setting. The hanging and floor installation production will also be presented, whi- ch includes the exhibitions common thread — hammered metal sheets on rocks found in the forest, integrated with textiles and modelled/engraved wax.
The topics probed by the artistic corpus focus on human inner apparatus and phenomena, seeking to stimulate perception and sensitivity through figuration, storytelling and expression with the lead~aid of scenery and natural elements, reminding the viewer of the coexistence and mutuality of which we are a part. The title preludes a looming change, perhaps one that has already occurred that we are not yet aware of… alteration which cannot be reversed, only embraced.
“Accidentally shift the precarious ‘balances’ of the self and inner dynamics irre- mediably uncover are triggered, altering perception-conception of ourselves and others, weaving intersections of awareness that we may come across”.
The exhibition and art is supported by Svenska Kulturfonden, Arts Promotion Center Finland and Tidskrift Kontradiktion.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Bekim Hasaj (1990) and Valentina Gelain (1992) are two artists based in Ostro- bothnia, Finland. They graduated in Visual Arts from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, Italy. Currently, the artists are exploring a multidisciplinary appro- ach to research and practice, leading them to work with video, photography, performance, installation, poetry, painting, sculpture and so on.
Starting in 2018, Hasaj and Gelain worked in different artistic-cultural directions under Black Box Genesis and from 2023, they also strengthened their collabora- tion as an Artist Duo.
Their inspiration draws from the rural and natural environment, interacting dee- ply with its elements. Investigate the land’s forms and physicality, or penetrate symbolism that can be traced back to human beings.
The work aims to explore and represent the inner sphere, dealing with existential issues through introspection and self-awareness, trying to manifest the mental and psychological dimension. This non-visible that becomes a network of univer- sal connection and belonging, in their (poetic) analysis finds depiction, meaning and concreteness in the surrounding.
The upcoming projects of the Artist Duo and Black Box Genesis carry forward the research between art, artist, art making and cultural interaction with the commu- nities in natural and rural areas.
